As with many couples who spend so much time at work, Stephen and Freddy first met chatting on a dating app! They connected in the waning days of the pandemic just before Stephen drove home for Christmas 2021 with his family. When he returned, he asked Freddy to a drink and Freddy suggested Cambridge Common. They had their first date on January 12, 2022. After talking until they closed out the restaurant, they made plans for a few days later. Freddy chose again, this time opting for a romantic walk through Mount Auburn Cemetery on the coldest day of the year. Needless to say, they closed out another bar warming up! They have been inseparable ever since!
Freddy quickly fell in love with Stephen's two cats, George (grey tabby) and Albie (black). They developed an especially strong relationship with Albie who took to meowing loudly in the other room until Freddy would get up and come pet him. A special favorite of Albie's was to lie down by putting his head down first and tumbling forward into the wall such that he ended up with his butt in the air. Freddy found his inability to sit down right especially endearing. George was more distant as Freddy took over his side of the bed, but they have now developed a much more healthy sharing agreement in which Freddy puts up with mountains of fur all over their side of the bed and George gets to stand on top of Freddy until they wake up.
Freddy repaid Stephen for the addition of such great cats to their life by planning a stunning first Valentine's Day together in Boston's North End, where they had delicious Italian food and started a tradition of winter outings to the North End to indulge their shared love of good Italian food on a cold night.
Freddy and Stephen had all kinds of fun around the Boston area. When they started dating, Freddy had just moved to a large studio in Cambridge and Stephen was still living on the top floor of a triple-decker in Dorchester. They often met in the middle: kayaking in the Charles River, catching a Red Sox game at Fenway with friends, traveling to local vineyards, indulging in their love of good food with friends and much more.
They have also traveled further afield. They spend many weekends visiting Freddy's mom, Mary, in Gloucester and Freddy's Dad, Ted, in Matunuck. They also make it down to New Jersey a few times a year to see Stephen's parents Joanne and Rick. Finally, they have enjoyed family vacations with Stephen's family in Cape May, NJ and Mary in Nova Scotia.
In July 2023 Stephen and Freddy moved together to Arlington, MA, renting an apartment next to Spy Pond and a short walk from Arlington Center. They quickly fell in love with the area for its trees, pond, good restaurants, and proximity to Boston. George and Albie quickly fell in love with the apartment for a different reason: stairs! Never before had they had such a fun feature inside an apartment to play on! Their favorite activities include chasing each other up and down the stairs for play, following Freddy and Stephen up and down the stairs, running up the stairs and yelling back down that they want attention, and best of all, walking up the stairs right in front of them so they can stop short and try to knock them over.
Stephen started teaching history in 2018 and moved to teaching at Brookline in 2021 where he teaches 10th grade world history and 12th grade psychology classes. This September he will get tenure at BHS. He continues to help run the Queer Student Program which includes clubs, classes, programming, town-wide pride events, and more to help meet the needs of LGBTQ+ students at the high school and throughout the district.
Freddy has been working to finish up a degree in health and human services at Lesley University in Cambridge while also working several different jobs over the last few years. They started working at Hotel 1868 and Porter Square Hotel in August 2021 where they still work, though they are now down to one day a week. Starting in October 2023, Freddy joined Stephen at BHS as a para educator in the RISE Program, working with students with disabilities. They have thrived in this endeavor, quickly becoming a valued and oft requested para.
That fall they also got to attend Gia and Dave Hagedorn's wedding!
On Christmas Day 2023, Stephen proposed to Freddy at their Grandparent's house in Matunuck, RI. The next day they travelled to NYC where they ate incredible sushi, explored the city, and caught several Broadway shows. On December 29, Freddy reciprocated and proposed to Stephen at the MET's Dining Room Restaurant, one of their favorite places to eat in the city.
Since then Freddy and Stephen continue to have fun around Arlington, hosting summer BBQs, Friendsgiving Dinners, seeing friends, going to concerts, and adventuring all over the area to find new, fun restaurants, cideries, museums, parks, and more!
